As part of the INsite Lab led by Dr. Stacy Branham at UC Irvine, I had the opportunity to work on this project as a research assistant in 2022. The YouTube study aims to explore a qualitative content analysis of people with vision impairments (PWVI)-generated data online. We seek to understand the independence perspective of PWVI as they care for others.
For our preliminary data collection process, we conducted searches using terms related to PWVI and caring-for roles (e.g. blind, low vision, partially blind, parent, spouse, etc.) using the YouTube platform. We only included content that was created by or with the participation of PWVI. We analyzed this data by collecting observations, direct quotes, identifying care-for roles, themes, and discussions.

A coding frame is a set of categories to be applied to the collected content to generate metadata for interpretation. Along with video title, post date, URL, we will gather additional information such as the analyst's subjective codes for which caring-for roles are present, technologies that are used, challenges that are faced, etc.
For this process, we generated care-for terms and caring-for roles, applying these codes to either the top-level or the secondary-level data sets, see figure 1.
